Chalo (transl. Let’s Go) is a 2018 Indian Telugu-language action romantic comedy written and directed by Venky Kudumula in his directing debut. It was produced by Usha Mulpuri under Ira Creations and stars Naga Shaurya and Rashmika Mandanna, in her Telugu debut. Released worldwide on 2 February 2018, it became Naga Shaurya’s highest-grossing film in India and overseas.

Story

Hari has loved a good fight since childhood. Tired of the trouble he causes, his family sends him to Tiruppuram, a village on the Andhra Pradesh–Tamil Nadu border where Telugu and Tamil residents clash every day. At his new college, run by a strict principal who tries to keep the feud out, Hari falls for Karthika, a Tamil girl. It is a romance that cuts across the village feud.

Production

The film was the first production of Ira Creations, the company Naga Shaurya started with his mother, Usha Mulpuri. It was shot mainly in Hyderabad. Sai Sriram was the cinematographer and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao the editor.

Music

Mahati Swara Sagar composed the songs and background score, and the album was released by Aditya Music.

Reception

Critics were broadly positive. The Times of India gave it three stars and said the director turned a clichéd story into a fun ride. The Hindu called it a good showreel for Naga Shaurya’s range within a commercial film. Firstpost, also rating it 3 out of 5, said it turned cross-border enmity into a hilarious premise full of surprises.

Box office

The film was a commercial success and became the biggest earner of Naga Shaurya’s career in both India and overseas markets. Firstpost described it as a step in the right direction for him.
