Yaar Ivan

Veedevadu (transl. Who Is He?) is a 2017 Indian Telugu-language action thriller written and directed by Tatineni Satya and partly reshot in Tamil as Yaar Ivan. It stars Sachiin J. Joshi and Esha Gupta, with Prabhu and Kishore in key roles, and music by S. Thaman.

Story

At a boathouse in Goa, Sathya kills his wife Shruthi and is arrested. With all the witnesses and evidence against him, the court remands him and orders the police to produce primary evidence. The Hyderabad police commissioner assigns the case to ACP Prakash Varma, a ruthless encounter specialist known as a “psycho”. With a new subordinate, Hyder, he begins investigating by talking to Shruthi’s friend Gouthami.

Development

The film was first reported in May 2015 as a Telugu–Tamil bilingual about a kabaddi player jailed after being accused of murdering his girlfriend. Shooting began only a year later, in May 2016, with a song filmed in Poland, and production was completed in December 2016.

Marketing

Before the Tamil first look was released, the team kept the lead actor’s identity a secret and ran a contest inviting the public to guess who it was, with a trip to Goa as the prize.

Music

S. Thaman composed the soundtrack.

Reception

Telangana Today called it a watch-worthy thriller. The New Indian Express felt it could have been much better without its unnecessary padding. The Times of India saw potential for a good masala noir in Yaar Ivan‘s premise but said its elements never came together into a satisfying story.
