Iddarammayilatho is a 2013 Telugu-language romantic action film written and directed by Puri Jagannadh. The title translates as “with two girls”. It stars Allu Arjun, Amala Paul, Catherine Tresa and Shawar Ali, and it was shot entirely in Spain and Paris. Bandla Ganesh produced it under Parameswara Art Productions, and a Malayalam dubbed version was released simultaneously as Romeo & Juliets.
Story
A central government minister is accused of holding huge sums of black money and of moving it into Europe through his daughter, Akanksha, a psychology student who has gone to Barcelona for higher studies without knowing she is being used. In her new flat she finds a diary and begins to read it. It tells the love story of Sanju Reddy, an engineer who became the lead guitarist of a band and earns his living from stage and street performances, and Komali, a young woman who has come to Barcelona to study the violin.
When Akanksha happens to meet Sanju in person, the diary suddenly becomes much more than a story. The diary breaks off without an ending, and her questions about what happened to Komali draw her into a dangerous world of money laundering and revenge. The film runs on the gap between what the diary says and what really happened, and this summary leaves those revelations for the viewer.
Cast
Alongside the four leads, the supporting cast includes Brahmanandam, Ali, Nassar, Pragathi, Tanikella Bharani, Tulasi, Subbaraju and Rao Ramesh.
Casting and production
Amala Paul was chosen in September for one of the two female leads. The second lead went through several changes: the makers first picked Taapsee Pannu, then gave the part to Richa Gangopadhyay, then returned to Taapsee, before Catherine Tresa finally took the role. The music director also changed, with Chakri the first choice before Devi Sri Prasad was brought in.
The film was launched on 18 October 2012 at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad, and shooting took place in Spain in February 2013. Puri Jagannadh moved away from film stock for this project and shot digitally on Arri Alexa cameras. The first look was unveiled on 10 March 2013, and the theatrical trailer came out on 8 April 2013, Allu Arjun’s birthday.
Music
Devi Sri Prasad’s score marked his sixth collaboration with Allu Arjun and his first with Puri Jagannadh. The British pop and reggae singer Apache Indian features on the track “Run Run”, and Suraj Jagan sings on “Ganapati Bappa”. The album was well received by reviewers.
Release
Blue Sky bought the overseas rights for approximately ₹30 million, and the film opened overseas on 30 May 2013 on more than 175 screens, which the source describes as a record. The worldwide release followed on 31 May 2013 across 1,600 theatres, with a U/A certificate from the censor board.
Reception
Critical responses varied. The idlebrain.com reviewer gave it 3 out of 5, enjoying the first half and calling the film stylish while feeling that its emotional side did not land. The 123telugu.com review also highlighted the style, along with Allu Arjun’s performance, Catherine Tresa’s screen presence and the action, but felt the slower second half and the lack of Puri Jagannadh’s usual heroics and punch dialogues could hold it back. Oneindia’s reviewer, by contrast, recommended the film and found the second half the more engaging part.
