Rachcha (also spelt Racha; meaning “Chaos”) is a 2012 Telugu-language action comedy directed by Sampath Nandi and produced by Megaa Super Good Films. It stars Ram Charan and Tamannaah Bhatia, with Ajmal Ameer, Mukesh Rishi, Dev Gill, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Nassar and Brahmanandam. Released on 5 April 2012 to positive reviews, it was a commercial success.

Story

Raj is a gambler in Hyderabad whose adoptive father urgently needs a liver transplant. His rival, James, offers him the money on one condition: that he makes Chaitra, a medical student and the daughter of a feared crime boss called Bellary, fall in love with him before New Year’s Eve. Raj takes the bet, and the romance puts both of them in the gangster’s sights. As they flee, secrets about Raj’s own childhood and a long-buried crime come to light; the film saves those revelations for its second half.

Cast

  • Ram Charan and Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead roles
  • Ajmal Ameer, in his Telugu debut
  • Dev Gill, as one of the antagonists
  • Mukesh Rishi, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Nassar, Brahmanandam and Krishna Bhagavaan
  • R. Parthiban in a cameo as Ram Charan’s character’s father, his Telugu debut
  • Lisa Haydon in a song

Development

The film grew out of the collapse of an earlier Ram Charan project, Merupu, which was shelved after one schedule. Producer N. V. Prasad then approved a script from Sampath Nandi, and the film was launched at Ramanaidu Studios on 12 June 2011. The title combines the first letters of Ram and Charan. Ram Charan trained for about 45 days and worked on a new look and dance moves for the role, and Tamannaah, cast in May 2011, said her character’s layers unfold as the story progresses.

Filming

Shooting began in Hyderabad in June 2011 and moved through Sri Lanka, Bangkok, Goa, Kerala’s Periyar National Park and locations near Tirupati and Pollachi. A song and a fight were filmed in a bamboo forest in Anji County, China, making it the first Telugu film shot in the interior forests of China. Ram Charan was injured twice during filming, which pushed the release from March to April 2012. Principal photography ended on 1 April 2012.

Music

Mani Sharma composed the five-song soundtrack and the score. The film includes a remix of “Vaana Vaana Velluvaye” from the film Gang Leader.

Release and box office

Alongside the Telugu release, the film was dubbed into Tamil as Ragalai, into Malayalam as Raksha and into Hindi as Betting Raja. According to the source it grossed over ₹81 crore, with a distributor’s share of ₹45 crore. It received four nominations at the 60th Filmfare Awards South, winning for choreography, and five SIIMA nominations.

What critics said

Critics cited in the article saw it as a formula mass entertainer aimed at Ram Charan's fans, entertaining within those limits but predictable.

  • Sify said actor and director play safe with a familiar mass-masala pattern that offers nothing new but will entertain fans.
  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) found the sense of déjà vu in the revenge story palpable, missing the spark of films like Pokiri or Kick, but said viewers without expectations would be entertained.
  • The Times of India (Karthik Pasupulate) wrote that it is designed for the “hardcore Mega Fans and it makes no bones about it”.
  • Oneindia Entertainment (Ramchander) praised Sampath Nandi for making a predictable story interesting.
  • CNN-IBN found it technically brilliant but lacking a credible story.
  • Rediff.com (Radhika Rajamani) criticised its predictability and stereotyped pattern.

Box office: the article reports ₹8.54 crore at the AP/Nizam box office on the first day, a record at the time, and ₹24.42 crore there in the first week.
