Sayaji Shinde (born 13 January 1959) is an Indian actor who has worked across many Indian film industries, including Marathi, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Starting out in Marathi theatre, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Marathi for Aboli (1995) and had his breakthrough playing the poet Subramania Bharati in the Tamil film Bharathi (2000). He has since played villains, supporting characters and occasional comic roles, and is also known for his environmental work.
Early life
Shinde was born into a farming family in Vele, a village in Satara district, Maharashtra. He has described a childhood of poverty after the family’s farmland was submerged by a dam. He moved to Satara for his education and earned a BA in Marathi, working meanwhile as a night watchman for the state Irrigation Department on ₹165 a month, and later as a clerk and at a co-operative bank. He took up amateur theatre in college, and after moving to Mumbai worked at a bank for seventeen years while acting on stage.
Theatre
He began performing one-act plays in Marathi in 1978 and gained notice in plays including Zulva (1987), which brought him wider recognition, One Room Kitchen (1989) and Amchya Ya Gharat (1991). His stage work also includes Sakharam Binder and Hijada.
Film career
From theatre he moved into Marathi films, and Aboli earned him a Filmfare award. The actor Manoj Bajpayee, who had read a newspaper article about him, recommended him for the 1999 Hindi crime film Shool, associated with Ram Gopal Varma. His breakthrough came the following year in Gnana Rajasekaran’s Tamil film Bharathi, in which he played Subramania Bharati.
He went on to appear in Hindi films including Vaastu Shastra (2003), Sarkar Raj (2008) and Sanju (2018), and built a long career across Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bhojpuri and other industries, frequently cast as a villain or in supporting parts. He has also produced Marathi films, supporting Nagesh Bhonsle on Goshta Choti Dongraevadhi, in which he played an agriculture minister, and producing Dambis (2011).
Environmental work
In 2015 Shinde founded Sahyadri Devrai, which restores community-protected sacred groves in the Western Ghats with native tree species. According to the organisation, it has planted more than 650,000 native trees at over 29 sites in Maharashtra. He has said the effort grew from a promise to plant 5,000 trees in memory of his mother. He has campaigned against tree felling, including a 2025 plan to clear trees in Nashik’s Tapovan area for the Kumbh Mela.
Politics and honours
On 11 October 2024 he joined the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar, saying that working within the political system would help his social work; he served as a star campaigner but did not contest the election. His honours include the Natsamrat Balgandharva Gaurav Puraskar from the Government of Maharashtra (2024) and awards recognising his conservation work.
He married Alka Shinde in 2002, and they have a son, Siddharth.
