Gayatri is a 2018 Telugu-language action drama directed by Madan, with writing by Diamond Ratna Babu, and produced by Mohan Babu, who also stars in a dual role as both hero and villain. It features Nikhila Vimal, Shriya Saran and Anasuya Bharadwaj, with his son Vishnu Manchu. An official remake of the Bangladeshi film Aynabaji, it was released on 9 February 2018 and was dedicated to the director Dasari Narayana Rao.

Story

Dasari Sivaji, a stage actor, runs a home for destitute children named after his late wife, Sharada. When he rescues a young woman named Gayatri from a gang, he discovers she is the daughter he lost long ago, and that she believes her father heartlessly sold her as a child. As the truth about Sivaji’s past comes out through his diary, a darker figure who shares his face enters the story.

Production

Mohan Babu announced the film after a two-year break, producing it under Sree Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures. It was shot in Tirupati and at Ramoji Film City, where Nandamuri Balakrishna, then shooting Jai Simha, visited the set. Action director Kanal Kannan spent 11 days filming a fight between Mohan Babu’s two characters using a motion-control rig for the visual effects. The first look was released on 25 December 2017.

Music

S. Thaman composed the music, released on Silly Monks Music, and Sarvesh Murari was the cinematographer.

Reception

Deccan Chronicle felt it was strictly for Mohan Babu’s fans, and Firstpost said it could have been a taut thriller but was tailor-made for its star, while The New Indian Express praised his commendable performance and called it a decent watch.
