Power is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language action comedy directed by debutant Bobby Kolli (credited as K. S. Ravindra) and produced by Rockline Venkatesh, both making their Telugu debuts. It stars Ravi Teja, Hansika Motwani and Regina Cassandra, with music by S. Thaman. Released on 12 September 2014, it was, according to the source, a box-office success.
Story
The film centres on two lookalikes. Baldev Sahay is a corrupt but brave ACP in Kolkata, and Tirupathi is a cheerful young man in Hyderabad who dreams of becoming a policeman. When Baldev dies trying to save a notorious gangster, the Home Minister of Bengal recruits Tirupathi to pose as him. The film reveals why Baldev turned corrupt and how Tirupathi completes his unfinished mission.
Development
Ravi Teja chose K. S. Ravindra’s script, pitched by one of the writers of Balupu, as his next film. Producer Y. V. S. Chowdary launched it on 1 September 2013 but withdrew over financial problems, and Kannada producer Rockline Venkatesh took over. A second launch was held on 11 December 2013, a date noted as 11/12/13. Several Balupu crew members returned, including dialogue writer Kona Venkat, composer Thaman and editor Gautham Raju. The title Power was announced on 24 January 2014.
Casting
Hansika Motwani, in her first film with Ravi Teja, called her role more performance-oriented than her usual parts. Regina Cassandra was chosen as the second heroine, Vaishnavi. Harish Uthaman made his Telugu debut in a negative role after the director saw him in Pandiya Naadu. The supporting cast included Prakash Raj, Brahmanandam and Kota Srinivasa Rao.
Filming
Production began on 11 December 2013. The talkie portions were shot in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangkok. Two songs were filmed in Bulgaria, making it the first Telugu film shot there. Principal photography ended on 14 August 2014.
Release and remake
The film opened on 12 September 2014 and was successful at the box office. It was remade in Bengali under the same title in 2016.
