Pushpa 2: The Rule is a 2024 Telugu-language action drama written and directed by Sukumar and produced by Mythri Movie Makers with Sukumar Writings. The sequel to Pushpa: The Rise (2021) and the second instalment of the Pushpa series, it stars Allu Arjun in the title role. It is among the most expensive and longest Indian films ever made, and according to the source it grossed between ₹1,642 crore and ₹1,800 crore worldwide, ranking at the time of release as the second-highest-grossing film in India.
Premise
The film picks up the story of Pushpa Raj, a labourer who has become a red sandalwood smuggler. Now a feared and respected figure in the trade, he faces mounting threats from his enemies, above all the police officer SP Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, whose rivalry with Pushpa carries over from the first film. As Pushpa’s ambitions grow beyond smuggling into politics and international deals, so do the dangers around him. The film’s many confrontations and its closing turns are best left for viewers.
Cast
Allu Arjun returns as Pushpa, a role that had already won him the National Film Award for Best Actor for the first film, as well as his fourth Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. According to the source, the Pushpa films are the highest-grossing of his career. The cast also includes:
- Rashmika Mandanna
- Fahadh Faasil
- Jagapathi Babu
- Sunil
- Rao Ramesh
Development
Before Pushpa: The Rise was released in 2021, the filmmakers announced that the story would be told in two parts. The sequel was formally announced in December 2021, shortly before the first film’s release, under the title Pushpa 2; it was renamed Pushpa 2: The Rule when the first film came out.
Production
Part of the sequel was originally shot back-to-back with the first film, but Sukumar later revised the storyline, and principal photography began in October 2022. Mirosław Kuba Brożek was the cinematographer and Naveen Nooli the editor, while Devi Sri Prasad composed the music.
According to the source, the film was made on a budget of ₹400–500 crore, placing it among the most expensive Indian productions. Its runtime, given as between 200 and 224 minutes, also makes it one of the longest Indian films.
Release
Pushpa 2: The Rule was released worldwide on 5 December 2024 in a wide range of formats: standard screens, IMAX, 4DX, D-Box and PVR ICE.
Box office and reception
Critical reviews were mostly mixed to positive. Commercially, the film was a major success. At the time of its release, it was the second-highest-grossing film in India and the fourth-highest-grossing Indian film worldwide. For Rashmika Mandanna, it became one of the highest-grossing films of her career, and her role in it won her the SIIMA Award for Best Actress.
