Vinaya Vidheya Rama (meaning “The Obedient and Loyal Rama”) is a 2019 Telugu-language action comedy drama co-written and directed by Boyapati Srinu and produced by D. V. V. Danayya. It stars Ram Charan, Vivek Oberoi, Kiara Advani and Prashanth, with music by Devi Sri Prasad. Released for Sankranthi on 11 January 2019, it was panned by critics and audiences and failed at the box office.

Story

Ram, an orphan adopted as an infant by four brothers, grows up fiercely protective of the family that took him in. His eldest brother, Bhuvan, becomes a chief election commissioner, and the younger brothers work under him. Ram’s temper and loyalty put him in conflict first with a corrupt local politician and then with Raja Bhai, a dictator-like strongman in Bihar, once his family’s safety is threatened. The film is built around the violent showdown that follows.

Cast

  • Ram Charan in the lead
  • Vivek Oberoi
  • Kiara Advani
  • Prashanth, returning to Telugu films after nearly 25 years

Production

Cinematographer Rishi Punjabi, who had shot Boyapati’s Sarrainodu and Jaya Janaki Nayaka, filmed half of the picture before leaving over scheduling conflicts, and Arthur A. Wilson completed it in his fourth film with the director. A. S. Prakash, who had worked on Boyapati’s Simha and Legend, was the production designer.

Music

Devi Sri Prasad composed the music, working again with Boyapati Srinu after films such as Legend and Jaya Janaki Nayaka, and with Ram Charan after Yevadu and Rangasthalam.

Release and reception

The film was released worldwide along with Tamil and Malayalam dubbed versions. Reviews were overwhelmingly negative: critics at The Hindu, The Times of India, India Today and Hindustan Times faulted its illogical, over-the-top action and weak screenplay, and The Indian Express compared it to an exaggerated Balakrishna action film. After its commercial failure, Ram Charan wrote an apology letter to his fans.

What critics said

The article describes negative reviews from critics, who faulted Boyapati Srinu's writing and the film's disregard for logic.

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) suggested aspiring filmmakers watch it to learn “how not to write or make a film”.
  • The Times of India said Boyapati becomes a pale shadow of himself as a storyteller.
  • India Today saw a meaty story that defies gravity and logic.
  • The Indian Express likened it to a Balakrishna action film on steroids, with a clumsy screenplay.
  • The New Indian Express felt any worthwhile plot is lost among the fights, songs and elevation dialogues.
  • Hindustan Times called it dated and a mess that even Ram Charan cannot fight his way out of.
  • Firstpost wrote that realism has no place in its world.
