Baadshah (meaning “Emperor”) is a 2013 Telugu-language action comedy directed by Srinu Vaitla and produced by Bandla Ganesh. N. T. Rama Rao Jr. plays the title role, alongside Kajal Aggarwal, Navdeep, Brahmanandam and Kelly Dorji. Released on 5 April 2013 on 1,550 screens, it was a commercial success, and Brahmanandam won a SIIMA Award for Best Comedian for his role.

Story

Rama Rao dreams of becoming an IPS officer but is rejected because his father works for a notorious international gangster. After his brother is killed in a bomb blast arranged by that same underworld, Rama Rao takes on the identity of Baadshah and works his way into the crime syndicate to bring it down from within.

Cast

  • N. T. Rama Rao Jr. as Rama Rao, known as Baadshah
  • Kajal Aggarwal, the female lead
  • Navdeep and Kelly Dorji
  • Brahmanandam as a police officer
  • Suhasini Maniratnam as the hero’s mother; Mahesh Babu provided a voice-over

Development

Vaitla announced the film in July 2011 while finishing Dookudu. Working titles included Mafia and Action before it became Baadshah, and it was launched at Ramanaidu Studios on 18 March 2012. Rama Rao Jr. slimmed down for a new look. Samantha was approached first, but Kajal Aggarwal took the female lead, her second film with him after Brindavanam.

Filming and music

Shooting began in Milan on 1 July 2012, moved through Europe and spent about six weeks in Bangkok, then continued in Hyderabad, with the climax filmed at Nagarjuna Sagar; it wrapped on 15 March 2013. K. V. Guhan was the cinematographer and M. R. Varma the editor. S. Thaman composed the six-song soundtrack, his second film with Vaitla, and the album was a big success.

Release and box office

The film was released worldwide on 5 April 2013 with 1,200 prints and was later screened at the 2014 Osaka Asian Film Festival. According to the source it earned a distributor’s share of ₹48.5 crore.
