Ravi Teja (Bhupatiraju Ravi Shankar) is an Indian actor and film producer who works in Telugu cinema. He worked his way up from small roles and assistant direction to lead roles, and is known for his comic timing and the nickname “Mass Maharaja”. His honours include three Nandi Awards and a Filmfare Award South, and he appeared in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
He was born on 26 January in Jaggampeta, in the former East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Wikipedia gives the year as 1968; Wikidata gives 1962. He grew up largely in northern India because of his father’s work, then attended college in Vijayawada.
Career
He moved to Madras in 1988 and took small parts in films such as Karthavyam (1990) and Chaithanya (1991), and later appeared in Allari Priyudu and Varasudu (both 1993) and Ninne Pelladata (1996). He also worked as an assistant director. Krishna Vamsi’s Sindhooram (1997), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu, gave him a notable supporting role. Srinu Vaitla’s Nee Kosam (1999), his first lead, won him a Nandi Special Jury Award.
Puri Jagannadh’s Itlu Sravani Subramanyam (2001) established him as a solo lead, and Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru! and Idiot (2002) were successes. Krishna Vamsi’s Khadgam (2002), in which he played a would-be actor, brought a second Nandi Special Jury Award. He followed it with hits such as Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, Venky and Bhadra. S. S. Rajamouli’s Vikramarkudu (2006), in which he played two roles, became his highest-grossing film up to that point. He also starred in Shock (2006) and Dubai Seenu (2007). Puri’s Neninthe (2008) was not a box-office success, but his performance as a young director won him the Nandi Award for Best Actor.
Surender Reddy’s Kick (2009) was a huge hit. He followed it with Shambo Shiva Shambo (2010), Harish Shankar’s Mirapakay (2011), and Nippu, Daruvu, Devudu Chesina Manushulu and Sarocharu (all 2012). Gopichand Malineni’s Balupu (2013) was one of that year’s biggest successes. Kick 2 (2015) failed, while Power (2014) and Bengal Tiger (2015) followed. After a year’s break he played a blind man in Anil Ravipudi’s Raja the Great (2017), one of his biggest hits.
After Touch Chesi Chudu, Nela Ticket and Amar Akbar Anthony (2018) and Disco Raja (2020), Malineni’s Krack (2021) was a big comeback. Khiladi and Ramarao on Duty (2022) failed, but Dhamaka (2022) became the highest-grossing film of his career. In 2023 he reunited with Chiranjeevi in Waltair Veerayya, which won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Telugu; Ravanasura and Tiger Nageswara Rao did poorly. His more recent films are Eagle and Mr. Bachchan (2024), Mass Jathara (2025), and Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi and Irumudi (2026).
