Khaidi No. 150 (transl. Prisoner No. 150) is a 2017 Indian Telugu-language action drama directed by V. V. Vinayak and produced by Lyca Productions and Konidela Production Company. Chiranjeevi plays a dual role opposite Kajal Aggarwal. It was his 150th film and his return to a lead role after nearly a decade. A remake of the 2014 Tamil film Kaththi, it was released for Sankranti on 11 January 2017. According to the source, it grossed over ₹164 crore worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing Telugu film at the time.

Story

Kaththi Seenu, a petty criminal, escapes custody in Kolkata and flees to Hyderabad, planning to leave for Bangkok. When he and his sidekick find his exact lookalike, Shankar, wounded by thugs, Seenu takes on Shankar’s identity to dodge the police. He moves into the old-age home Shankar runs, meaning to steal money meant for its residents.

Development

Filming of Chiranjeevi’s 150th film began in 2016. Like the original Kaththi, which starred Vijay and Samantha, the story deals with farmer suicides and water scarcity. The film was financed by Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan and producer A. Subashkaran, and it was Vinayak’s second film with Chiranjeevi. The Paruchuri Brothers adapted A. R. Murugadoss’s story. Kajal Aggarwal was confirmed as the heroine in July 2016, and Tarun Arora was cast as the villain.

Filming and music

Principal photography began on 23 June 2016 with key scenes at Chanchalguda Central Jail in Hyderabad. Later schedules took place at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. A special song with Raai Laxmi was shot in October, and two songs with the lead pair were filmed in Europe in November 2016. Red Chillies VFX handled the visual effects. Devi Sri Prasad composed the five-track soundtrack and score.

Box office

According to the source, the film grossed ₹50.45 crore on its opening day, passed ₹95.4 crore in two days, and grossed over US$2.45 million in the United States.

Reception

Critics largely saw it as a successful comeback vehicle. The Times of India gave it 3 out of 5 and said Chiranjeevi was back, if not with a bang. 123 Telugu called it a typical mass entertainer and a thumping comeback, and Firstpost said its real purpose was to announce the Megastar’s return. The Indian Express noted a brief cameo by Ram Charan in a song.
