Attarintiki Daredi (meaning “Which way is aunt’s home?”) is a 2013 Telugu-language action comedy drama written and directed by Trivikram Srinivas and produced by Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and Reliance Entertainment. It stars Pawan Kalyan, Samantha and Pranitha Subhash, with Nadhiya, Boman Irani and Brahmanandam. Despite much of it leaking online days before release, it became the highest-grossing Telugu film up to that time and won five Nandi Awards and four Filmfare Awards South.

Story

In Milan, the business tycoon Raghunandan tells his grandson Gautham Nanda that he longs to reconcile with his daughter Sunanda, whom he disowned years earlier for marrying against his wishes. Determined to bring her home before his grandfather’s 80th birthday, Gautham travels to Hyderabad and, calling himself Siddhartha, takes a job as a driver in his aunt’s household. Sunanda, however, knows who he is and has no intention of forgiving her father, and Gautham must win the family over one member at a time.

Cast

  • Pawan Kalyan as Gautham Nanda, Raghunandan’s grandson
  • Boman Irani as Raghunandan, in his Telugu debut
  • Nadhiya as the aunt, Sunanda
  • Samantha as the female lead
  • Pranitha Subhash as Samantha’s character’s sister
  • Kota Srinivasa Rao as Sidhappa Naidu
  • Brahmanandam, Rao Ramesh, Mukesh Rishi, Ali and Posani Krishna Murali in supporting roles

Development and casting

Trivikram first narrated the script to Pawan Kalyan in January 2011, but both took on other films first, Trivikram making Julai and Pawan Kalyan Gabbar Singh. The film was launched at the Venkateswara temple in Film Nagar on 23 November 2012, with much of the technical crew of the pair’s earlier Jalsa. Trivikram had Nadhiya in mind for the aunt from the start; she took the role at his insistence despite fearing typecasting. Samantha was confirmed as the heroine in October 2012, her first film with Pawan Kalyan, and Pranitha joined in January 2013. Trivikram chose not to cast his regular collaborator Sunil as a comedian, feeling it would be unfair after Sunil’s success as a lead.

Production and music

Principal photography ran from January to July 2013, mainly in and around Hyderabad, with significant portions in Pollachi and Europe; Pawan Kalyan went on his first location hunt, in Spain. Prasad Murella was the cinematographer, and some sequences used a Milo robotic camera brought from Mumbai. Devi Sri Prasad composed the songs and score, holding music sessions in Barcelona.

Release and box office

On 22 September 2013 about 90 minutes of the film leaked online and was widely shared, which affected its release plans. It opened on 27 September 2013 to positive reviews and became a major hit. According to the source it earned over ₹131 crore, with a distributor’s share of ₹74.88 crore, surpassing Magadheera as the highest-grossing Telugu-language film until Baahubali: The Beginning. Besides its Nandi and Filmfare awards it won the B. Nagi Reddy Memorial Award, and it was remade in Kannada as Ranna (2015), in Bengali as Abhiman (2016) and in Tamil as Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven (2019).

  • The Hindu (Sangeetha Devi Dundoo) praised the climax and called it “A good dose of fun, tailored for the box office”.
  • The Times of India (Ch. Sushil Rao) credited Pawan Kalyan's comedy, Peter Hein's fights, Trivikram's writing, the cinematography and Devi Sri Prasad's music.
  • Sify called it pure entertainment carried by Pawan Kalyan and Trivikram's effective handling of a simple story.
  • Idlebrain.com (Jeevi) praised the script and said it touches the heart while keeping viewers laughing.
