Oohalu Gusagusalade (transl. Imaginations Whispered) is a 2014 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy written and directed by Srinivas Avasarala in his debut and produced by Sai Korrapati and Rajani Korrapati under Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram. It stars Naga Shaurya, Raashii Khanna in her Telugu debut, and Avasarala himself. Adapted from Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac, it was released on 20 June 2014 to positive reviews and was a commercial success. Film Companion lists it among the 25 greatest Telugu films of the decade.

Story

Venky works at a TV channel and dreams of becoming a newsreader like his father, but he has spent four years stuck anchoring teleshopping ads. His boss, Uday Bhaskar, is awkward around women, while Venky is not. Both men fall for Prabhavati, and a love triangle follows in the spirit of Cyrano.

Cast

  • Naga Shaurya as Venky
  • Raashii Khanna as Prabhavati
  • Srinivas Avasarala as Uday Bhaskar, the CEO of a TV channel

Development

Avasarala, who holds a screenwriting diploma from UCLA, wanted to start with a small, easily executed film and built his story on the central conflict of Cyrano de Bergerac. After many attempts, Sai Korrapati agreed to produce, and the film was launched on 9 September 2013. Naga Shaurya won the lead through an audition after four and a half years of trying. Raashii Khanna was approached after the makers saw her in Madras Cafe. The title, chosen after 40–50 were rejected, comes from a song in the N. T. Rama Rao film Bandipotu.

Filming and music

Shooting began in October 2013 in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam on a low budget. It relied on close-ups and changing set details to make each frame look different. Cinematographer Venkat C. Dileep made his Telugu debut, and Kalyani Malik composed the music. A poster in the film nods to Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, reflecting the director’s admiration for Allen.

Awards

Avasarala won the SIIMA Award for Best Supporting Actor (Telugu) and a Nandi Special Jury Award for the film.
